LATEST FROM HERBIE’S KITCHEN
A lot of us are taking extra care with finances at the moment, and being able to make a delicious and economical meal for your family is something we all aspire to.
We only source the very best ingredients in our spice blends for optimal results in your cooking, and sometimes an individual pack may seem expensive. However, on average, for using one blend in a recipe (meaning you need very little else for flavouring), it will cost between 30 and 60 cents per portion for the spices.
Here are some of our favourite family meal recipes and an estimate of cost per portion.
TANDOORI CHICKEN SKEWERS WITH RAITA
To make a tandoori paste, simply mix our Tandoori Spice Blend with plain yoghurt and tomato paste. Nothing artificial, just loads of flavour, and no waste with an unused, open jar.
Other ideas for using this blend are:
• use to coat lamb chops before grilling
• coat a whole cauliflower in paste and roast until tender
• use the spice blend as a dry rub on meat

Other ways to use this Mexican blend are:

HONEY SOY CHICKEN
The combination of honey, soy and Chinese Five Spice is one that kids in particular love. Again, this is a mild blend that doesn’t have any chilli heat. If you’d like to spice up this recipe, you can add some sriracha or chilli powder to the marinade.
Other ideas for spice blend:
• use 1 teaspoon to 2 cups of cooked rice and add a beaten egg and handful of peas for a quick fried rice
• dust tofu in spice and pan fry
• use the same marinade for pork ribs
