For the past 18.5 years this iconic red two story terrace on Sydney’s Darling Street Rozelle that has been the retail and culinary education home of Herbie’s. For almost two decades it has been the indisputable mecca for herb and spice purchases, classes, discoveries…and exotic sensory experiences.
On 31st March the Herbie’s Spices caravan will strike tent and plot an exciting new spice route. The store in the red Herbie’s building will relocate its stock, allowing the spice obsessed Hemphills to forge the future stages of their burgeoning herb and spice business. From 1 April visiting spice and herb pilgrims will be able to find the aromatic treasures previously found at Herbie’s just four doors up the road, at The Essential Ingredient Rozelle.
The move will allow the Hemphills to spend more time at The Spicery on the Central Coast.
In the same way that chefs are at their best in their kitchens, with Herbie’s Spices steady growth, the Hemphills are at their best focussing on sourcing the very best, working on new spice blends and overseeing production at The Spicery. Their encyclopedic range of herbs and spices continues to fly out the door with growing internet mail order sales, and through selected stockists around Australia.
Some of their new found time will be devoted to conducting a greater number of spice classes around the country at the hundreds of specialty retailers who stock Herbie’s Spices. The Essential Ingredient’s cooking school will become home to the Hemphill’s ‘Cooking with Spices Classes’, where their daughter Kate, the third generation of the Hemphill herb and spice dynasty, will enhance the sessions with her European trained cooking skills.
